Upholstery

What is upholstery?

As an apprentice upholsterer you will be employed in an industry which offers training in a variety of skills and methods which are essential to the manufacture of domestic and commercial furniture. You will follow a comprehensive training programme enabling you to create items such as suites, sofa beds for the domestic market and/or office type seating, caravan seating, re-upholstering of pubs for the commercial market.

What training will I receive?

The training on offer is varied and covers the use of tools and equipment, to enable you to carry out tasks such as ‘pre-upholstery’, the fixing of springs and webbing into the furniture frames etc. leading to the final covering which could be in soft materials such as dralon and print cloths and to companies specialising in leather upholstery (a skill which would involve learning about the antiquing process) Applicants should be prepared to work to company quality standards and demonstrate a degree of attention to detail.

What qualifications will I get?

You will be assessed in your place of work by a qualified assessor upon completion of your training programme which will lead to a Level 2 certificate in Upholstered

Furniture Production from the City and Guilds/ Furniture, Furnishings and Interiors Training Organization.

You may wish to follow the Advanced Apprenticeship route, which includes a Level III NVQ in Furniture Production and certification in the following Key Skills:

Communication, Application of Number, Information Technology, Personal Skills and Problem Solving.
