Wood Machining
What is a wood machinist?
As an apprentice wood machinist you will be following a comprehensive training programme which offers training in a variety of areas in the wood machining industry. This is a highly skilled job which will involve setting up and operating a wide range of woodworking machines which will include cross cut saws, panel saws, band saws, surface planers, spindles, routers and sanders etc. Some companies also have NC and CNC machinery on which you may train. You will be responsible for the basic maintenance of all the machines you have received training on, which will include changing and sharpening cutters, saws and blades. You will be trained to set the machines to fine tolerances. Vernier gauges and other precision measuring equipment can be used when checking finished sizes.
What training will I receive?
You will learn to set up and operate different machines under the guidance of a skilled and experienced wood machinist who will give you personal one to one training ensuring that your training is of the safest and highest possible standard. You will need to be interested in producing work of quality as all companies today are working to very high quality standards.
What qualifications will I get?
There will be no need to attend college as you will be assessed in the workplace by a qualified assessor. Dependent on your own abilities employers training opportunities, you will follow one of three routes:
- NVQ Level 2 in Wood Machining.
- Apprenticeship at level 2 NVQ in Furniture Production plus Key Skills level 1 in Application of Number, Communication, Information Technology and Personal Skills.
- Advanced Apprenticeship i.e. Level 2 plus Level 3 NVQ in Wood Machining plus Key Skills in Application of Number. Communication and Information Technology. Problem Solving and Personal Skills.
