Advice for businesses following recent Cyber incidents

Following the cyber incident on Friday the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the Police have asked for following information to be communicated.

The full statement from the NCSC regarding the recent ransomware attack can be found here.

For the most up-to-date guidance on combatting the recent ransomware attack visit this NCSC page - This is quite technical, so you may need to pass this link to your IT staff or contractor.

To help reduce the risk of falling victim to a similar attack in future, please follow the guidance below:

  • Understand the “technical estate” that you are responsible for – Not just computers, but things like smartphones, printers and network switches as well.
  • Install the latest updates on all software on all systems within your network (See below for Windows XP patch)
  • Use Anti-Virus software at all times and ensure that it is also updated.
  • Regularly backup your system or critical data to a storage device that is not within the same network. Consider cloud storage options where suitable.

If you believe that you have been a victim of a ransomware attack, report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online at www.actionfraud.police.uk

Further comprehensive guidance on securing your business can be found on the government’s Cyber Aware website
