Luke recently completed his apprenticeship with us at WEBS Training, so we wanted to share his final project and how it has been used. Luke, an apprentice with Eximious Furniture who used his apprenticeship to re-train into a new trade from working in a warehousing role, used his final project to make a dining table for his own home.
Final projects for the Level 3 Bespoke Furniture Maker course include designing a piece of furniture within a budget and timescale and must include a complex joint. Training officer, Craig Martin, encourages the learners to push themselves with their final project, as they have freedom with their design so can experiment with styles and techniques they may not get to use at work. To enforce this further, Craig makes sure the apprentices create a unique piece, and that they complete the full development process from their own product design through to manufacture.
Luke chose a castle joint in the leg design, where he wanted to add a design element, but for it not to overpower the overall look of the piece. In addition to this, he created a serving board to go with the table, which used skills he’d not used before. This was made from offcuts from making the table, which supported his knowledge and skills development for reducing waste and making the most of materials used.
Craig says of Luke “Luke was a great apprentice to work with, and his final project was very well done. It is nice that his final project was something that he can now use on a daily basis, and that his family can enjoy.”
